Course description
ICT is all around us and can be found and used in all walks of life. Whether you are interested in developing web sites, managing databases, analysis data in spreadsheets or manipulating graphic images, then you will find GCE ICT useful. The focus of this course is using ICT in the real world. All coursework is done in the context of real life scenarios using everyday applications. When you have finished you will be well prepared to use ICT in many professions or businesses.
What will I learn?
AS ICT consists of two compulsory units:
G061: Information, Systems and Applications (External)
Theory knowledge includes; the difference between data, information, knowledge and processing; hardware, characteristics of software and application areas; spreadsheet concepts; relational database concepts; the role and impact of ICT.
G062: Structured ICT Tasks (Coursework)
Candidates have to design, develop, test and document their solutions to various taks set by the exam board.
A2 ICT has a further two units:
G063: ICT Systems, Applications and Implications (External)
Theory knowledge includes; an understanding of the systems cycle; designing computer-based information systems; networks and communication; applications of ICT.
G064: ICT Project (Coursework)
Candidates analyse, design, develop, test, implement, document and evaluate a client-driven project.
What are the entry requirements?
Students applying for this course will have relevant previous ICT experience and have successfully completed a suitable ICT focused or Computing qualification equivalent to GCSE at grade C or above. Previous experience of using a range of general ICT appliations would be an advantage.
Specific skills required
Ability to understand problems in the world around us and to visualise and develop technology solutions to solve those problems. Develop logical system solutions. Translation of logical models to physical designs and implementations. Keep abreast of advancements in hardware and software technology. Learn and apply applications software at an advanced level. Managing and communicating with others in the management of technology projects.
How will I be assessed?
Information, Systems and Applications (External) - 2 hour exam = 60% of AS level/30% of A level
Structured ICT Tasks (Coursework) = 40% of AS level/20% of A level
ICT Systems, Applications and Implications (External) - 2 hour exam = 30% of A level
ICT Project (Coursework) = 20% of A level
What are the costs?

Future opportunities
This course offers a good introduction to a higher level of study of ICT or as a detailed background for someone taking a different career direction. Some students take the AS course to give them a better understanding of ICT to support higher education and careers aims where ICT is a strong element, such as business or accountancy.
